As you travel, it’s important to continue taking care of your smile, even though you’re busy and probably exhausted from the many activities and adventures. If you fail to clean your teeth and gums regularly, you could suffer severe dental consequences, like tooth decay, gum disease, and enamel erosion. So, to help you keep your smile in tip-top shape while you travel, Dr. Philip Tetz and our dental team have some helpful tips and information for you.

First, brush your teeth twice a day. Make sure to brush for two minutes each time—preferably once in the morning and once at night. As you brush, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Make sure you thoroughly scrub each tooth and you scrub the surface of your tongue when you’re done.

Second, floss your smile at least once a day—after each time you eat if possible. Flossing will help you remove the plaque and food particles between your teeth, which can help you prevent gum disease and an embarrassing food-filled smile. As you floss, use a product of your choice and be careful as you clean along the gumline.

Third, pack travel-sized oral hygiene tools. The smaller the toothbrush you have, the better. This is because it won’t take up much room in your traveling bag. It’s also recommended to pack a toothbrush cover to keep the bristles clean. When it comes to toothpaste, make sure to check the size. Remember, liquids that weigh more than 3.4 ounces are not allowed on the aircraft, so make sure your paste is light enough to meet the weight requirements. Feel free to pack a flossing product you prefer.
